Immanuel – ʻImmânûwʼêl
עִמָּנוּאֵל – “God with us”
In the last post, I shared a vision I had in September about the importance of the blood and the name of Jesus. I have been praying and asking the Lord about where He wants to take this next. I am feeling led to dive into the different names of Jesus. So why does the name of Jesus hold so much power?
His name has so much power because:
1. It was God given ( Phil 2:9 )
2. Who Jesus is
3. What Jesus accomplished
To begin to know the fullness of who Jesus is, we can start by looking at all of His different names. It can help us learn about all of the characteristics He has and what He is like. The first name we will look at is:
Immanuel
The name Immanuel is used twice in the old testament (Hebrew) and once in the New Testament (Greek). We will look at two verses here:
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
Matthew 1:22-23 ‘22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).’
In Isaiah, it was a prophecy that Isaiah was giving that Jesus was coming and what He would be called. In Matthew, it was showing us how the prophecy was fulfilled. Jesus came to be with us.
He is with us
He came to be with us. Right in the middle of the brokenness here on earth. He didn’t come to a palace or someplace that was comfortable far away from us. He could have. He could have come and been distant. But he didn’t. He came right to us. To be with us right in the middle of everything. You see, Jesus isn’t afraid of brokenness. He’s not afraid of messes.
Matthew 28:19-20 “19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
He is with you always
Knowing that He is with us is one of the most comforting promises. We will have to go through hardships. We will have to go through trials. But…He will be with us. Always.
Isaiah 43:2-3 “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;…”
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you”
What really sticks out to me in this passage is that He didn’t say that He would rescue us so that we wouldn’t have to go through the waters or fire. He promised that He would be with us when we do. Also that it wouldn’t overtake us. He is our helper and constant companion, which is such a comfort to me.
Hebrews 13:5-6 (AMP) 5 Let your character [your moral essence, your inner nature] be free from the love of money [shun greed—be financially ethical], being content with what you have; for He has said, “I will never [under any circumstances] desert you [nor give you up nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless], nor will I forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you [assuredly not]!” 6 So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently say,
“The Lord is my Helper [in time of need], I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?”
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you”
He is with us. Right now. Right now, even if we feel far from Him. He’s here even with all the craziness and chaos that is going on in the world. He hasn’t left us. He is the God that never leaves. He is with us in our messes and in our brokenness. He is with us in our trials. He will never ever abandon us. He is faithful.
